Mesothelioma: Causes of the Disease

Mesothelioma is becoming a dreaded term in circles of people who have been afflicted by the disease or who have seen its devastating effect on man.  Big companies also dread the disease, as it has drained millions of dollars from their coffers.  Mesothelioma attorneys have now and again championed the rights of both victims and the families they left behind.

Mesothelioma cancer is associated with asbestos contamination in the body.  Asbestos is a mineral with fibrous filaments that are resistant to heat.  This characteristic has made this mineral a valuable component in almost all industrial equipments and has revolutionized the construction industry.  However, the downside outweighs all the touted benefits of asbestos.

There are three types of asbestos: blue, brown, and white.  All of these are equally harmful and have been linked with mesothelioma.  These are now used under strict regulations.   Asbestos cannot be smelled nor tasted.  It is absorbed into the body through inhalation    Contact with asbestos is lethal.  Not only is asbestos is known to cause mesothelioma – a cancer caused by the fibers of asbestos that is embedded in the lungs or along the abdominal cavity - some fibers even stick to the digestive system.  Unwittingly many people have come into contact with asbestos.  People who lived near asbestos factories and mine had contracted mesothelioma even if they did not work in the mines or factories.  Dust carries asbestos fibers and cause asbestos related diseases when inhaled and swallowed.   Unfortunately, family members are contaminated by the asbestos dust clinging to the clothes of the worker.

The asbestos can also enter the lung tissue and settle in the membrane around the lung.  This develops into pleural mesothelioma or other lung diseases.  People with high risk jobs, meaning jobs that require their handling or exposure to asbestos in any form, are most likely to acquire lung cancer or mesothelioma.  Shipbuilders, insulation installers, tile workers, refinery workers, welders, electricians, sanders and pipe fitters are always in contact with the deadly asbestos.

Despite their awareness of the dangers of asbestos, many companies did not fully disclose the dangers workers were being exposed to. The workers involved with the manufacture of asbestos products were not provided the necessary protection.   In the 1970s, the U.S. government, galvanized to action, regulated and restricted the use of asbestos.  But by then, many workers had developed asbestos-induced diseases.  Today, there are many qualified lawyers who specialize in handling cases related to asbestos-caused diseases.  For victims, there is still hope for just compensation for the years of pain and suffering and financial distress.

If you suspect you have the disease or you have a loved one who was exposed to asbestos, take action now.     Get in touch with mesothelioma lawyers as there is a different time limit for each state.
